Indeed, her efforts are being recognized; at the 10th Anniversary Benefit Gala of the Worldwide Orphans (WWO). in 2007 she was
presented an Honorary Orphan Ranger award to Liya Kebede for her work and dedication in improving the health and well-being of
mothers and children across the globe.
“The woman is the core of the family.” Kebede declares, “she really needs to be helped so she can take care of her family and we
can have better generations and children who can take care of themselves, who are educated and healthy and can then take Africa
forward.” Kebedes’ ultimate vision is the mobilization of African people. Through her projects she hopes to equip the population
with necessary tools and trades so they can support themselves, give a boost to the economy, and help Africa sustain itself.
Her latest project is Durame Hospital; the only one in the Kembata and Tembaro Zone. This facility is expected to provide services
to the whole population of the Zone which is estimated to be 850,000. Although the physical construction of the hospital building is
completed, due to shortage of funds, it lacks medical equipment for the Operation Theater, obstetric and in-patient services.
