Nollywood's Darling: Dakore Egbuson MIMI Features Interview By And Written By: Nani Hapa Photo Credits: None Caption: None . MIMI: What do you consider your big break that catapulted you from starlet to superstar? DE: My Big Break was when Emotional Crack came out; the response was so overwhelming. I went on to win three Reel Awards for Best New Actress and Best Supporting Actress in two categories in Nigeria for my portrayal of a bisexual, manipulative woman who looked for love in all the wrong places. The movie was selected to be screened at the New York African Film Festival in April 2003 and that was so thrilling to represent our work internationally. . MIMI: Was it difficult to adjust to your fame? DE: Yes it was and I think I will always be adjusting; it’s surreal to me. I wasn’t really prepared for it because I was happy concentrating on getting better at acting but I do understand that fame is a by-product of what I do and appreciate the love and support of my fans. . MIMI: Did you have a moment where you realized, “Ok, now I’m famous” or is fame something that happens outside of you that you don’t internalize? DE: I never really thought of it. I had to internalize it so that it would make sense to me since it wasn’t something I actively pursued and people I didn’t know were coming to me in the street telling me how they admired my work and stuff so I realized quite gradually.
MIMI: As a bona fide superstar, what is the toughest thing you have to deal with? DE: Thank you … I think the toughest things are people who think they know the real me; who think I’m the character I portrayed in one movie, the loss of anonymity, the press can be challenging at times but overall God saw it fit for me to be who I am and He is my source so I leave it at his feet.
